Wondering if you are up to speed with topics that are likely to pop up at your upcoming dinner meet? Here’s a list of the key developments in finance that you should know:
When someone talks about MDR rates issue tell them that Government will discuss the issue with RBI
MDR (merchant discount rate) is the rate charged by a bank to a merchant for providing debit and credit card services. After demonetization the MDR rose up to 0.90 percent from 0.25 percent . According to Finance Minister the increase in charges will impact Digital India Movements. So to come up with solution the Government is going discuss the issue with rBI to bring down the charges.
When someone talks about investment tell them Indians invested more in stocks than in FD’s in FY17:
Recent trends have shown that Indian investors are finally moving from traditional safe investment options like FD, gold, and real estate to equities and mutual funds. In FY17 Indians invested Rs.8 lakh crore in stocks compared to Rs. 3.4 lakh crore in FDs. This is a good thing because initially the market was dominated by foreign investors and when they pulled out their investments it would impact the markets. However now foreign investors don’t impact our markets that much because Indian investors have increased.
When someone talks about U.S Tax Reform tell them its impact on India
The recent U.S. tax reform has proposed to significantly reduce the existing direct tax rates from 35 percent to 20 percent. This obviously seems like a good thing for the Americans, but totally screws us. That’s because U.S. MNC’s operating in India would record their profits in the U.S. to avoid paying the high taxes here.
When someone talks about food becoming expensive you can link it to inflation:
Retail inflation for November was 4.88 per cent in comparison to 3.63 per cent during the same period last year. Rise in inflation was expected but the analysts were surprised by quantum of the rise. The main reason for this drastic inflation rise was due to an increase in onion and tomato prices.
